Iona Macduff
I'm a Scottish writer and editor who's lived between the UK and the Himalayas for the past 20 years.
For many years I was focused on the human rights situation in Tibet - a varied job that on some days saw me interviewing elders in remote Tibetan refugee settlements, and on other days saw me suited and booted in Geneva supporting Tibetan political prisoners testifying at the United Nations.
I write on place and migration, often in relation to the climate crisis. I am most interested in what fosters connection, community and belonging amongst people in strange situations, at times seemingly in spite of this world and ourselves.
I have written for Hinterland Magazine, Himal Southasian, The Kathmandu Post, and South Asia Journal, and guest-edited the Climate Writing special of Hinterland Magazine which came out in December 2023.
I was shortlisted for the inaugural Future Places Environmental Essay Award 2021.
And, I am currently writing a nonfiction book, supported by being a Leverhulme Doctoral Scholar on the University of East Anglia's Critical Decade for Climate Change program.
